On the sixth day of our vacation, my wife and I vistied one of her friends who was also in Texas at the time. This friend has a brother who lives at Fort Hood, which is where the friend was staying while she was in Texas. So on that day, we drove from Plano, TX to Fort Hood TX, which, if I remember correctly, a little over a 2 hour drive.
Once we arrived at Fort Hood, we had to register our car so that we would be allowed to drive on base. In order to register the car, we had to get a number and wait for what must have been over 30 minutes until our number was called. Once our number was called, we had to show our identification, proof that our car was a rental and proof of insurance. Once we did that, we were given a pass to go on base. However, while we were going through the gate, we were not allowed in right away because my wife is not an American citizen; because of this, my wife had to get into the car that her friend's brother was driving because he is the one who was in the military. So, after my wife got out of our car and went into the car that was ahead of me, we were allowed on base.
I was surprised at how difficult it was getting in to Fort Hood with a car. While at Sheppard AFB, we had to sign in to be allowed on base, but they didn't worry about our car; Fort Hood, on the other hand, wanted to make sure we had insurance for our car, but to actually get on base, we only had to show our ID (as long as we were in the same car as the person we were visiting).
After staying for a few hours and eating a delicious dinner, we made the two or so hour drive back to our hotel.
